E. A. Davis was a member of the 23rd California Infantry during the Civil War and later a member of the famed "Mountain" Division of the US Cavalry. He fought in Cuba, Custer's Last Battle, and on many other campaigns
In his book, "Davis's Campaign of the Spanish-American War," he covers details from just about every campaign he was involved in, from Cuba to Santiago. In this book, he describes how the regulars fought the Cubans and how they were able to win over them by fighting as one unit with no confusion or hesitation in battle. He also explains where each unit went on campaign and what they did while there.
He also tells about some of the battles they encountered and what happened to those who were killed or captured. A great read for anyone interested in history or a war buff!
